Area Overview

What makes Vasai West special

Vasai West is the oldest settled part of this belt. The Portuguese fort at Bassein — Vasai Fort — sits at its western end, a large ruined complex of churches, gates and bastions that is among the most substantial colonial-era sites in the region.

Around it are the East Indian Catholic villages, orchards and the coast at Bhuigaon, Kalamb and Rangaon. The parish structure, the bottle-masala cooking and the annual feasts are all still very much alive.

The town itself is more established than anywhere else in Vasai-Virar, with a proper market, colleges and Cardinal Gracias Hospital. Pricing is the highest in this zone, which reflects that.
