Coimbatore Junction is the main station, on the Chennai-Coimbatore-Kerala trunk route. PODANUR JUNCTION to the south is older and still handles a share of traffic, and there are suburban halts along the Irugur and Podanur lines.
Metro
Coimbatore has NO METRO. The Phase 1 DPR - two elevated corridors, about 34.8 km - was approved by the Tamil Nadu government in February 2024, but THE UNION GOVERNMENT RETURNED IT IN NOVEMBER 2025 on the ground that the city does not meet the population criterion in the National Metro Rail Policy, which is read against the 2011 Census. Airport
Coimbatore International Airport at Peelamedu is about 12 km from the centre and unusually close in - which is convenient, and which is also why HEIGHT RESTRICTIONS apply across the eastern side of the city.
