Area Overview

What makes Iban Kalan special

Kalan and Khurd are the standard north Indian pair for two settlements sharing a name: KALAN is the larger, KHURD the smaller. They are identifying elements, not decoration, and the full name is the name.

BOTH HALVES ARE ON THIS SHEET, which is worth noting because it usually is not the case. Across this project, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Agra each carried HALVES with the pair missing — which is what made those look like capture gaps rather than naming practice. Varanasi had two complete pairs; Amritsar adds another.

THE PRACTICAL POINT: never drop the qualifier. Iban Kalan and Iban Khurd are two different revenue units with two different sets of records, and a listing giving only “Iban” has not identified either.

What do Kalan and Khurd actually mean?

Kalan means the greater and Khurd the lesser — they distinguish two settlements that share a name, usually where one grew out of the other. They are identifying elements, exactly like a surname, and dropping one produces a name that matches two different revenue units with different records, different owners and different prices. This project tracks them because their presence or absence says something about the sheet: where both halves appear, as here and on the Varanasi sheet, the capture was systematic; where only one appears, as on the Jodhpur, Udaipur and Agra sheets, something was missed. Amritsar gets this one right.

Is Iban Kalan suitable for families?

Local CBSE schools operate within 2 km with a local CBSE school about 7 km and Regional international school about 6 km, plus local hospitals about 2 km.
